Just to add to Eric's comments, there is no real need to be concerned
with most of these variables. The default settings will work fine for
most users. They are mainly used to preserve settings so that the next
time you run GRASS, it knows a little bit about how you left things.

As Markus says, the documentation is pretty sparse in how to use these
variables. Thus, if you want to change one, and you can't find any
documentation concerning it, feel free to ask the list. Someone should
know what it is used for.
