[GRASSLIST:3538] import data tutorial

Is there any GRASS 5 tutorials that provide step by step instructions on
how to import data?  Mabe a walkthru going from exporting from another
application (ARC for example) to establishing the location, mapset,
coordinate system to having the files actually in GRASS format?
Unfortunatly the tutorial datasets (spearfish, leics) provided for GRASS
are already in GRASS format, so they miss the very important step of
teaching how to format your own data and create the location and mapset
work area in order to start using GRASS.

I'm trying to learn GRASS GIS without any formal training and I just find
there are some gaps between doing the grass seeds / spearfish tutorials and
actualy getting non-GRASS data (DEMs, DRGs, DLGs, ARC coverages) into
GRASS.

If someone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly
appreaciated.
