I've had this problem as well. Making the window bigger and then being
careful not to go over the edge helped. As did moving to a much faster
computer with DRI enabled (run glxinfo, look for direct rendering: Yes)

Happened with a huge region with lots of data (40km^2, 5m grid), and
zooming in with the Perspective slider 'seemed' to make it worse, but it
wasn't limited to that. Didn't happen everytime, but more so the further
you zoomed in.

Happened a lot with: 550MHz PIII 384mb RAM, ATI Mach64 video (no DRI),
Debian Woody, grass5.0pre3, glutg3 v3.7, X 4.1.0.

Didn't happen as much with: 1600+ Athlon 768mb RAM, Matrox video (DRI On),
newish RedHat, grass5.0pre3 ... 

? I'd guess it was an OpenGL driver issue as well.. ?
