Gordon,
    could I possibly get a small sample of the file??  Not too much, just
the MIF header info and a couple of the vertices.  I have right now a grass
ascii vector -> mapinfo mif converter (very crude, done in PERL, but it gets
the job done).  I would be curious to see if I can reverse it to import
mif...

the other option to get into grass would be to import the mif into mapinfo
and export as dxf, or shape file...
