[GRASSLIST:4927] [newbie]: SRTM / r.in.gdal problems?

[ GRASS5, Debian/unstable (current), gdal (1.1.7, CVS) ]

I've obtained some SRTM [1] data, and try to import it using
r.in.gdal [2,3], but get errors eg;

	ERROR 4: `HDR.ADF' not recognised as a supported file format.
	ERROR 4: <DATASET_DIR> not recognised as a supported file format.

using both GDAL 1.1.7 or from CVS, against either a HDR.ADF or
the name of a coverage dataset directory.

Pointers?
