Probably neither. The usual reason is that the data doesn't lie within
the current region. You can use r.info to determine the boundaries of
the imported map, and "g.region -p" to determine the current region. 
You can change the current region to match a raster map's boundaries
with "g.region rast=...", or change the boundaries of a map with
r.region or r.support.
