[GRASSLIST:5654] where did my cats go?

I recently used v.digit (to create the cutter) and v.cutter to narrow a
vector layer down to a selected area. The original vector file, which
was cut, included several categories that were mapped to vector areas
on the layer. With the new layer, these categories are still present in
the dig_cats file (actually the file is exactly the same as the
original), but I am no longer able to query by cats as I get an error
back saying the areas are not categorized. Anyone have a solution? Does
v.cutter not preserve the category attributes of the vector areas?
