[GRASSLIST:1689] importing .gen file? (v.in.arc.poly segmenation faults)

Hi. I have been sent a couple of polygon maps in .gen format. I believe this 
to be arc/info ungenerate format. 

I tried 2 ways to import this as follows:

I
According to the Neteler and Mitasova book (p.125), I should use v.in.arc but 
to do this I need as input files, .pol, .pnt and .dat which i do not have. I 
think there is a command Ungenerate in Arc/info that can generate these 
files. Am I right?

Tried using v.in.arc.poly and it created the following files in the arc 
directory of the mapset I was using:
-rw-r--r--    1 keith    keith     4063634 Nov  5 14:38 temp.ply
-rw-r--r--    1 keith    keith           3 Nov  5 14:38 temp.pnt
-rw-r--r--    1 keith    keith           3 Nov  5 14:38 temp.txt



and produced some errors:
