If you try d.text.freetype (which might work, please report success or
failure to the grass mailing list), be sure to use GRASS 5.0.3+, as it
is broken in earlier versions.

I have grass53src_cvs_snapshot_exp_2003_11_01.tar.gz
As suggested I used the d.text.freetype see for yourself in the attachment 
:)
