The command would we "d.mon start=x0" or similiar.

Can you open windows of other GRASS unrelated X11 applications.
Maybe xeyes or xterm?
The error seem to be related to the setup of your shell
or X11 server and not the GRASS specific.

No I haven't tried this on OS X, because I try to use Free Software 
as much as I can. ;)
Maybe my general hints also are helpful.
