Why are you are reporting for layer=1 while you want to use layer=2 in
v.surf.rst (as I see below)?

Not weird at all. You have to set zcolumn to something - as these values
will be interpolated. Unless you set "layer=0" in order to use the
vector's Z coordinates (if it's 3D, but your is not).
