What happens when you type gdal_translate from the GRASS command prompt?

If you get the same error, you may need to make sure that
/usr/local/grasslib/bin/ is in your PATH variable.

Subject: [GRASS-user] Cannot save map display as anything but ppm image

When I try to save my map display as any kind of image (tiff, bmp, jpeg), it
displays an error "couldn't execute gdal_translate: no such file or
directory" and saves it as a ppm image.  I do have gdal_translate, it is
located in /usr/local/grasslib/bin/.

1.  Is this not the usual place for gdal_translate?
2.  If it is, why can Grass not find it?  Is there some sort of environment
variable that needs to be set?

Thanks,
Romy
