yes and no: garbage in - garbage out...

Apparently the metadata aren't properly stored in the file (what should
be there?). Since GRASS cannot guess them, it remains "unknown".

If you *know* the correct metadata, you can assign them to the
GeoTIFF file with

gdal_translate -a_srs epsg:XXXX geotiff_bad.tif geotiff_good.tif
r.in.gdal geotiff_good.tif out=geotiff_good
