gdalbuildvrt             http://www.gdal.org/gdalbuildvrt.html
GDAL Virtual Format Tutorial       http://www.gdal.org/gdal_vrttut.html

to build a virtual dataset with your several asc-files, no need to go
through A**G**-workflow.
