There is only one way to go for an actual Windows *port*, i.e. to port
the GRASS code to the Win32 API. Mike has recently started work on
this; if and when it's complete, there will be a Windows port.
Until then, we rely upon the fact that Cygwin is close enough to Unix
that supporting it isn't significantly harder than supporting any of
the various "real" Unices. Even once a fully-native version is
available, it should still be possible to use Cygwin/X11 (although
that environment would probably receive significantly less attention
than it does now).
X or not really isn't much of an issue for the GRASS core; XDRIVER
already works without X (apart from the Raster_RGB issue, for which a
fix is (hopefully) being tested). NVIZ is based upon Togl, and Togl
itself supports Win32 natively, so there shouldn't be any inherent
problem with making NVIZ work natively.
tcltkgrass currently has some X-isms, but they seem to be mostly
gratuitous, AFAICT.
