Hi Gary, and MapFish PSC,
Congratulations for making it through this process... I'm interested in
the answers to Jody's questions and would have a few more
questions/comments:
- From the http://www.mapfish.org/ site, which should be the natural
home of the project from the average new user's point of view, I could
not find any link to the source code of the software (the SVN
repository, or even the tarballs)... and no link to the trac.mapfish.org
dev/community site, mailing lists, IRC or other support resources
either. I would advise linking to the trac site at a minimum from the
www.mapfish.org site so that new visitors can find that information more
easily than by going back to Google.
- I find it interesting (and unfortunate) that the project manages code
under three licenses (BSD, GPL and LGPL)... not a blocker, but
definitely something that can be confusing to new users and can become a
FAQ in the future.
- In the source code review (rails plugin section), you list
./print/print-standalone.jar as being BSD licensed... the description
says it's a JAR package of the print module... which is GPL unless I'm
mistaken... Did I miss something?
- Gary: as the mentor, could you please comment on whether the project
has an open and active users and developers community? I believe it does
and the MapFish incubation status page says so, but I'd like to hear the
opinion of an observer not on the project that has been following them
for several months. More specifically, does the developer community work
in an open (i.e. on public lists, not behind closed doors) and healthy
way, open to input, new members and reaching consensus on decisions?
My last point is derived from the graduation checklist at
http://www.osgeo.org/incubator/process/project_graduation_checklist.html
... and one of the most important items to check in my opinion (after
license and code provenance review of course).
