Greg,
You have the correct read of things, the standards for "Community projects"
are intentionally lower than "osgeo projects" which are ready to operate as
an OSGeo committee (and are truly broad etc..).
I understand the intent with "community projects" - seeking to cast a wider
net and include more folks in the OGeo tent. I also respect that you are
personally uncomfortable with how broad a reach is being sought.
As an example I personally respect "benevolent dictator" as a valid choice;
but would never wish to join such a project (or even worse lead such a
project).
So if you uncomfortable with "is a company controlling direction" or a
"CLA" you have different personal hesitations; but can I hope respect what
OSGeo is trying to accomplish.
The board is setting the policy, we are trying to implement here in the
incubation committee.

Aside: I love working with companies, it is a very challenging advocacy and
outreach opportunity. I used to wear a suit one day of each foss4g
conference in order to chat with such folks and provide context for what
was going on!
