[mapguide-users] Experiences with Oracle Spatial

Hi Everyone:
I have successfully tried Oracle Spatial with MGEnterprise 2007, you must
realize that the only certified combination is Oracle DB 10g R1 10.1.0.2 (I
recommend 10.1.0.4 or later because of the bugs and fixes provided by Oracle
that are related with Spatial Data) and yes there is some issues like MGE
can not determine the type of geometry from the table (Point, Polygon,
Polyline) , because as you know that information is stored into Oracle
Spatial Metadata, but thats is not mandatory as same as the SRID (where the
coordinate system is stored) , there is also some flexible issues in the
Oracle Spatial Architecture that makes difficult validating the feature
tables (in the past Adsk Map 3D generates his own metadata info that was
read by MapGuide 6.5), further information is provided by Oracle Spatial
Documentation and Courses.
But you must know that the only necessary things you must have to work fine
with Oracle is an Oracle DB Server 9.2.0.5 or 10.1.0.3 with the Spatial
Option Enabled, and for the computer running MGE you need an Oracle Client
10g 10.1.0.2 or later (I had got problems with Oracle Instant Client), and
the Autodesk FDO Provider for Oracle (installed when you install MG
Enterprise).
Also you must configure TNS Names in order to communicate MGE with the
Oracle Server; further information is provided by Oracle Documentation.

I can't get the Oracle Spatial data to appear at all? Have you been able to
get the data to appear? If so, what coordinate system are you using? It
seems I can't get any of the Oracle stuff to work.
I second your experience on slowness. I takes a very long time just to
start to edit the layer. I did end up creating a seperate MGE user for
those layers I want to display in Enterprise. This way it doesn't have to
go through every single table in the main schema. This seems to have
helped, but I can't get the layers to appear in the map.

Another note on this is the way Enterprise gets the new schema information
back to you in Studio. I created a new spatial table and it took quite
sometime just to get the table to appear. I had to go out and come back in
and then create a whole new layer from scratch. Same goes for adding new
columns. I had to totally re-create a layer just to get a new column to
show up.

Wow, I never expected to be providing commercial product support on an open
source user forum :-)
Out of curiosity what version of the Oracle Database Server are you running?
Rest assured we are very aware of the performance issues with Oracle data
sources and are aggressively working on them. These other issues mentioned
here however we have not seen in house so I would like to try and get to the
bottom of them as well.
Thanks,
Bob

Another observation of Oracle Spatial data....
Have you noticed the symbolization on Oracle Spatial data? It shows a
point, line, and polygon. I'm assuming it's because Enterprise can't
determine the feature type? Not sure why it can't since it is contained in
the geometry of the feature. Even Mapguide 6.x was able to figure this
out.
Or maybe I'm doing something wrong, because I can't even get Enterprise to
display any of my Oracle Spatial data.

Can anyone provide some feedback to me on their experiences with the Oracle
Spatial FDO from the Enterprise edition? Has anyone gotten it to work in a
satisfactory manner? Are you seeing stability/performance issues? What is
your setup?
Our experiences aren't great. Some of our data displays but is quite slow.
Creating a layer from an Oracle Spatial source is extremely slow (over a
minute just to start editing). I suspect this is related to the reading of
the schema metadata, but I don't really know.
You can see my original (as yet unanswered) post here regarding one of my
specific problems here:

Even a simple yes or no would be helpful at this point.
Thanks,
