Yeah, looking at the source it passes a value of 7 for the quality.
That's out of a 100, so it's pretty low.  And there's no way to change
this right now other than modifying the source and rebuilding.
 
You should enter this as an enhancement artifact / wish-list item.
Seems like a useful setting to be able to control.

Following an answer I picked up on this mailing list, I have tried
setting my FORMAT type to each of the three listed image types.  I do
this in this in the ajaxmappane.templ file.  When working with photos I
get a nice benefit from changing the default from PNG to GIF.  The GIF
images produced in the AJAX viewer are about 1/3rd the size of the PNG
images.  That has to have a positive impact on performance.

 

However, when I try JPG, the image looks like garbage.  It seems that
the JPG is produced with near maximum compression and so loses almost
all detail.  Can the compression rate be set in some fashion, by editing
a file or adding an argument to the URL constructor?
