My idea is that you could try is:

Mapproxy 1/other
Old tiles in
server's
cache
	TMS
service

	===> 	
Mapproxy 2
Mapproxy 1
used as
server
	New format
Mapproxy
cache
	TMS
service

	===> some client
or
mapproxy-seed


I can't write down the configuration off the top of my head, though :-(
If mapproxy is used for both, you need only one mapproxy server :-)
