The bug also manifested in the msautotest with a hang in all my embedded
legend tests (against CVS head).  I have run them several times in the last
couple months, so I don't think it could have been a very recently introduced
bug.

Well, I think Howard is on the right track, automatically running the build
and tests nightly.  The challenge for the rest of us is to take problems
identified in the autotests seriously and act on them quickly.   Once Howard
has that setup, it also stands to reason that we would run the autotests on
all platforms he has test slaves running to help and identify platform
specific issues.
