Python laying an egg in mapserver-5.0.0-beta2

python setup.py install is producing an
mapscript-5.0.0_beta2-py2.5-linux-x86_64.egg file. Egg was not used in
previous versions of mapscript. Is this new in mapscrip 5.0? It is not
listed in Mapserver 5.0 release plan. In any case it does not appear to be
working. The egg file is put directly in site-packages, instead of
installing mapscript.py and _mapscript.so.
