[mapserver-dev] Rendering differences upon upgrade / 5.4.0-beta3 to 5.7-dev

Dear all,

We are currently in the progress to update our mapserver installation from
v. 5.4.0-beta3 to v. 5.7-dev
Both setups are running on an identical setup, using the exact same set of
libraries in a sandbox shielded from the system libraries.

However, in the newer version, the same mapfiles are rendered with
significantly thicker lines, larger symbols and larger fonts. The
(transparent) background colour of single map layers also changed.

Are you aware of relevant changes in the antialiasing, transparency
handling, or scaling of line thickness, fonts and symbols in the recent
versions that may have caused these changes?

The most important question for me is to understand whether these are the
intentional symptoms of intentional changes in the mapserver code (meaning
that they will not be changed, and we will have to adapt our mapfiles to the
newer versions), unintentional symptoms of intentional changes (same same, I
guess), or unintentional artefacts that should rather be corrected in the
code. Or, for example, if new parameters have been introduced that can
restore the old behaviour, changes that can be remediated with a minor edit
in the mapfile.

I have uploaded a few example files - each is available in the versions i1
(old version), i2 (new version) and diff, as requested from the two
mapservers using the same WMS request.
http://www.geonorge.no/examples_ms/

all examples show the different background colours
borders-* and rivers-* show the line thickness differences
church-* shows the differences in symbol size and rendering, and in point
feature rendering (the square-ish dots are other buildings)
all2-* and text-* show the differences in text scaling. Note that some
features (e.g. the E-labels on the west coast) disappear. Does that imply
that a different scaling factor is actually used and some MINSCALEDENOM
limit has been hit, or is it only a side-effect of the larger labels taking
up more room?

Thank you in advance for any hints,
Best regards,
Thomas
