make labels fit in a polygon

Hello,
Currently when labeling polygons, using MINFEATURESIZE AUTO will create a label only if the label will fit in the polygon. I was looking to see if Mapserver had a way to reduce the font size if a label doesn't fit. This would be similar to "Reduce font size" when using ArcGIS Maplex. Where you can start to label using one size, and if the label doesn't fit the label engine will keep trying with smaller font sizes until it reaches a user defined minimum label size.
I don't know if this can be done, would be difficult to program, or if it would impact performance. But I think it would be useful.
P.S. Let me know if I should be sending ideas elsewhere.
Thank You
