Thanks Steve,

Perhaps TYPE TILEINDEX should be documented and added to the XML schema if it is considered to be useful https://github.com/MapServer/MapServer/blob/main/xmlmapfile/mapfile.xsd

Hiding automatically from WMS layers may be handy for some users even we usually publish also the tileindex layer for visualizing and feature info queries.

I can confirm that "TYPE TILEINDEX" is valid in a layer. I believe setting this TYPE excuses the layer from render and query processing where "TYPE POLYGON" does not.

See https://github.com/MapServer/MapServer/issues/6404 and https://www.mapserver.org/ogc/wcs_format.html. The latter has an example about a layer using TYPE TILEINDEX. This type is not documented in https://mapserver.org/mapfile/layer.html. Does TYPE TILEINDEX exist and if it does, in which way it is different from TYPE POLYGON?
