Both Oracle 8i Spatial and SDE (and others) can set up alternate access 
via a configuration switch. OGC Conformance testing has been arduous but 
seems to be getting easier with the suggestion of self-test 
certification in order to really wear the OGC "label". This means there 
may be untested but compatible implementations of Simple Features 
(SF-SQL) out there. It would be nice to see someone make PostgreSQL be a 
compatible SF-SQL solution!
