transparency lost when layer is queried

Dear List,
Has anyone experienced the loss of layer transparency when querying?  I have
the following querymap and layer:
...
querymap
  status on
  style selected
end
...
layer
  data "sections"
  status default
  type polygon
  transparency 50
  class
    style
      outlinecolor 175 0 0
      color 0 200 0
    end
  end
end
...
Transparency works fine unless I query the layer, in which case it seems to
be ignored.  Any thoughts?
