Shptree running out of memory

Greetings,

I would like to be able to use a shapefile with about 2 million point
features in it in my mapserver application. 

I tried to index the shapefile with shptree with no success. The error I
received was that virtual memory was low, then shptree crashed. Is it
reasonable to expect shptree to be able to index this file or should I
find another way of displaying the features?
