ORACLE / Using unique

Hello, when using UNIQUE with an Oracle Spatial Layer we have to "must pass
a numeric column type" ... 
When we have a table with a primary key type VARCHAR ... Is there any way to
use UNIQUE without changing the data model ? ROWID is not numeric, ROWNUM is
numeric but it's not an identifier ... So should not work.

Any ideas ?
