shp2pgsql | psql error: fseek(...) failed on DBF file.

while running

shp2pgsql foo foo | psql

# shp2pgsql foo foo | psql -d foo

I get a bunch of...
fseek(-2045813584) failed on DBF file.
fseek(-2045813584) failed on DBF file.

before I Ctrl-C the operation. Any ideas why, and how I can correct it?

By the way, I get the same errors even when I two-step the operation
and try to create the interim sql file. What can I look for in my DBF
file to try and correct it?
