thanks for your reply. i had tried that as well but i thought that was for
windows. i am using mapserver on linux. the error i got then was 
Failed to load dynamic Layer LIB: msplugin_mssql2008.dll.so msGetSymbol():
General error message. Dynamic loading failed: msplugin_mssql2008.dll.so:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
