[mapserver-users] allowing MapServer access to data on another windows machine?

If I remember right, there are no problems if you can run Apache as a program by starting it from the command window (\ms4w\apache\bin\httpd). Then you will run Apache under the login account and drives which are mapped to a drive letter can be accessed. But it means that you must keep the console open. However, if you can tolerate it during the down time of your main server then it should be a fast and easy solution.

Jukka is correct, it is an Apache problem. IIS is the same. The web server is not allowed to access resources on the network. If your network is on a domain then you can give the apache 'user' a domain account. It's a little flaky but it does work. I haven't tried in a workgroup but it might be possible to give the apache user account permissions on the other machine. Alternatively, how about an external USB drive? Since it would be plugged into your server it would be treated as a local resource.

Good luck,
Rich

Hi,

I never managed to make it to work before we acquired more disks but it is about Apache and this is the reason

" By default, all Apache services are registered to run as the system user (the LocalSystem account). The LocalSystem account has no privileges to your network via any Windows-secured mechanism, including the file system, named pipes, DCOM, or secure RPC. It has, however, wide privileges locally. "

Some advice to start with is at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/platform/windows.html

I mapped the Z drive to a second old machine which will temporary hold the excess mapserver gis data. I received an error " Unable to access file. (Z:/ms4wCache/source/Picto2011Lyon/Picto2011.shp)\nmsShapefileOpen(): Unable to access file."
