Yes unfortunately those figures do not properly represent the data, and
they were meant only for an introduction to the topic...

Right, that's how I understand the data structure as well. In theory it
could be even more general, e.g.:

But I am not sure if such structure of vertical levels would make any
practical use, so this is merely just a theoretical example. In MDAL we
simply adopted the data model of stacked meshes as it is returned from
simulation software (without trying to do any transforms to turn data into
more "regular" structure).
