[OpenGeoscience] EGU: "hot" topics in the Earth, planetary and space sciences ?

Dear list,

EGU is currently preparing a blog series on "hot" topics in the Earth, planetary and space sciences which could be taken on by master- and PhD-students in the near future. For this they're looking for input on 

"exciting and compelling geoscience topics, that may be of societal relevance, but also cutting-edge research areas".    

Does anyone want to share her/his thoughts on this from the angle of Open Geoscience withing OSGeo ?
