Don't forget that there's also extensive support for G/Y/M base layers
in OpenLayers -- so in that sense OL *is* very definitely a common API.

One could without too much trouble write Mapstraction support for OL,
and have Mapstraction inside OpenLayers inside Mapstraction (or vice
versa).
