Yes but in geoserver if you open the geowebcache demos, it will show you 
examples of how to call your layers in different formats. You can use 
these examples directly in your code. For a finer definition of the 
layer you'll have to define the geowebcahce.xml yourself. The address 
for geowebcache demos as in docs yourserver/geoserver/gwc/service
