It sounds like a same origin / cross-domain issue.  You may want to review
this FAQ:
http://trac.osgeo.org/openlayers/wiki/FrequentlyAskedQuestions#ProxyHost.  I
believe IE will allow unproxied WFS from localhost, but when you load it on
a web server, you'll have the same issues in IE you are experiencing in
Chrome.
