 Agreed in principle @dbastion.

 But it's not so easy as an initial make valid, as valid geometry might
 become invalid after scaling to tile pixel coordinate space. But so maybe
 the suggestion by @strk to break out the scaling step into a separate
 function is what we should aim for.
