[postgis] PostGIS Types X PostgreSQL Types

Hello all

I'm writing a monograph about GIS tools and and i like to mention 
PostGIS but i have a question i like to clearfy ...

as a newbie i want to know is PostGIS uses the default types of 
polygon, line or point already implemented in PostgreSQL or it uses 
this types as usual char type?
