Just found some more info on editors that support DocBook :-)

    * XEE (http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/ - thanks to the Geotools
      folk for this link) can read the existing manual after some minor
      modifications to the headers.
    * It looks like a DocBook filter is being worked on for OpenOffice
      (http://xml.openoffice.org/servlets/SummarizeList?listName=dev -
      look at the recent April postings)
    * AbiWord does support DocBook, however at last attempt it would not
      open the manual without major hacks.

Is it worth trialling XEE as an editor?  It's not Free Software, however a standard edition can be freely downloaded and source code is available.  It also offers WYSIWYG (with an appropriate CSS2 stylesheet) or tree view of the document.  So far it looks pretty good.

If so, let me know and I will submit a modified version (DB v4.1.2) of the manual.
