hi again - actually looking at the ouput in the config.log with the LDFLAGS
set it fails :

configure:2288: checking for C compiler default output
configure:2291: gcc -fPIC  -lstdc++ conftest.c  >&5
configure:2294: $? = 0
configure:2340: result: a.out
configure:2345: checking whether the C compiler works
configure:2351: ./a.out
ld.so.1: ./a.out: fatal: libstdc++.so.2.10.0: open failed: No such file or
directory
./configure: line 1: 14393 Killed                  ./$ac_file
configure:2354: $? = 137
configure:2363: error: cannot run C compiled programs.

so I guess geos wont build and ergo niether will postgis with geos
support!!!
do you think this would go away with a later version of the GNU compiler (we
are on 2.95.3) which was the system bundled version I believe...?

cheers

james
