hi friends,

i wish to thank you all for your input.

since the package building is a matter of human decision, not only
running dpkg-buildpackage, manual intervention in the control should be
allowed.

therefore, the environment autodetection will be done in a separate
directive of debian/rules, but the resulting control will stay stable
through the standard dpkg-buildpackage invocation. thus, suppressing
postgresql-8.0 dependency will be no problem, and i'll specifically do
it before uploading again.

indeed, packages for the older postgis/postgresql combinations may have
their place in debian-gis alone.

this repeated bouncing experience should however teach us, that not only
users, but also developers might well check the correctness of the
packages in debian gis, before attempting to upload them to debian.

best regards,

alex
