[postgis-users] question about GEOMETRY_COLUMNS

Hi,
what is the GEOMETRY_COLUMNS table for?
Is there any other reason other that standard compliance?
Which functions use this table?

I'm asking because I've noticed that my databases work even when there are
no entries there.
