Setting project projection to the custom projection created by the plugin
(which is in fact 900913) aligns perfectly.

What is still unclear to me is why it happens: shouldn't the layer's CRS be
sufficient to have a correct alignment ?

In other words, if I have 2 layers (shapefile=23032  and gmap=900913) with
CRS correctly set, the canvas should align independently from project's CRS,
am I wrong ?
