This is something I'd love to see in GDAL. As usual, plans are mostly driven 
by parties interested to make things happen and provide appropriate resources 
or funding.
That said, on the writing side, MVT is a special beast that mixes traditional 
vector concepts, as well as rendering considerations for generalization, 
subselection of attributes for lower zoom levels, etc.

But this goes a bit out of scope of the main topic of this thread ;-)
