I'd suggest defering any substantial QGIS work on that topic to the PROJ 6
release (temptative release date February 2019) where my current work will
land (and it is likely that there will be adaptations needed when integrating
GDAL 2.4 that will rely on PROJ 6). It will likely obsolete a lot of existing
concepts regarding CRS transforms, and in particular the notion of a +towgs84
pivot (it will still be available of course). For example, in the "datum
transformation", instead of having a Source transform and Destination
tranform, you could have a single Transform field (actually you can already do
this with PROJ 5). And you will be able to select more existing
transformations from the PROJ database, taking into account area of interests.
