[QGIS-Developer] Why is .qgz the default format?

Hi QGIS devs,

Am I the only QGIS user that finds it a bit annoying that .qgz is now
the default format instead of .qgs (plain text format)?

I really often look into the .qgs files, or I create scripts that
process them or find and replace stuff in text editor.

Now I always have to unzip first and then zip again. Quite annoying.

Couldn't we switch back to .qgs as default?

Or if the switch back to .qgs is no option - couldn't we introduce a new
global option that allows me to set my prefered way of storing .qgs
files? Zipped or unzipped?

Andreas
