[QGIS-Developer] Changing Icon of QGIS Layer Panel Layers

[Catania, Luke A ERDC-RDE-GRL-VA CIV]

I want to change the icons of the layers in the QGIS Layer Panel Tree.

I found a plugin called Layer Tree Icons that adds a context menu to the layers where you can change it there, but is there a way to do it in code without this plugin by getting access to the tree object in the layer panel?
