[QGIS-Developer] Ang: Rules for plugin names

Hi,

As the developer of GeoNod, I would like to provide some context.

GeoNod is an independent Swedish geodata service that I have developed. The name was chosen for my own product, and there has never been any intention to imitate GeoNode, mislead users, or suggest any affiliation with GeoNode or GeoSolutions.

I fully understand the importance of avoiding confusion between plugins and established products, and I respect the concerns raised during the review process.

However, I must admit that I find it somewhat disappointing to see my plugin singled out as a public example, particularly with a comparison to Nike and potential brand infringement, without the full context being presented.

I am a small independent developer trying to contribute a useful tool to the QGIS community. I have taken the reviewer's feedback seriously and am already working towards publishing the QGIS plugin under a more distinct name.

I believe that concerns of this nature should ideally be discussed directly with the developer first, allowing an opportunity to clarify or address the issue before using the project as an example in a wider public discussion.

I fully support clearer naming guidelines for plugin submissions. Such guidelines would benefit developers and help avoid situations like this in the future.

My intention has always been to contribute something useful to QGIS users, and I hope we can move forward constructively.

Best regards,

Hampus

Ämne: [QGIS-Developer] Rules for plugin names

Hi

When publishing plugins a developer can choose any name to give
their plugin. At what point do we act to prevent users from using
known product names as their plugin name.

A typical example of the plugin  https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/geonod/ .
Taking this name at face value a users might associate it as the
official plugin from  https://geonode.org/ . I have opened an issue
asking the author to reconsider naming his plugin to something https://github.com/Segl-segl/geonod-qgis/issues/1#issuecomment-6443133278 .

Should we enforce anything related to this or we just leave it as
it is and we let the end users decide. I think we could add some
rough guidelines to the publishing page to nudge developers to
have names that are distinct and separate from known established
      products.

If i was an owner of Nike and someone produces a product called
Nik and sells it next to my shoes would i be worried ?, maybe not,
      but food for thought.

Regards

Admire
