Thanks to Angelos, my QGIS 1.7.4 is now working fine from the Geo repository, with full python plugin functionality.

The problem was my fault, for including the factory repository as well as the 12.1 version.

Much appreciated guys!!!

This is why OpenSuse is the supreme Linux GIS platform! 

(Though to be fair - with Ubuntu a close second :-)
